PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

NO on Measure C

The upcoming March 5th elections hold paramount importance, especially for residents of the City of Sacramento, and particularly professionals like physicians. Recently, a concerning development has emerged in the form of an ill-advised business tax increase that unfairly targets professionals irrespective of their gross revenues: Measure C. This not only threatens our livelihoods but also undermines the vital services we provide to the community. As physicians, it is imperative that we stand up and make our voices heard during these elections. Our profession has already faced challenges like Medicare reimbursement cuts, Medical Board fee increases, and now, local tax hikes further threaten our ability to practice effectively. The SSVMS Board of Directors has endorsed a NO on Measure C vote and is a major contributor to the No on Measure C campaign that we launched with the California Medical Association, California Optometric Association, Sacramento Valley Psychological Association, Sacramento District Dental Society, and more.

By casting our votes thoughtfully, and actively participating in the electoral process, we can advocate for fair policies that support our profession and ensure a conducive environment for healthcare providers to practice. Failure to engage in this critical moment may lead to an exodus of physicians to other states or premature retirements, ultimately impacting the quality of healthcare available to our community. Let us unite, raise our voices, and fight for our livelihoods and the integrity of our profession. Your vote matters, now more than ever.

Thank you!

Vanessa Walker, DO

Case of the Month: Navigating the Off-Label Use of Ketamine Therapy

A recent "Case of the Month," published by the Cooperative of American Physicians (CAP), examines the risks of ketamine’s growing off-label use serving as a cautionary tale for providers using ketamine therapy with their patients.

In 2016, Dr. Kloda sought treatment with Dr. Brooks for his depression, hoping to try ketamine therapy to address his ongoing suicidal thoughts. Dr. Kloda informed Dr. Brooks that he was under the care of a psychiatrist, and “expressly prohibited” Dr. Brooks from contacting his psychiatrist. Soon thereafter, Dr. Brooks initiated a ketamine treatment plan for Dr. Kloda. After the completion of the initial ketamine treatment series, Dr. Kloda’s husband, Mr. Valdes, opined that Dr. Kloda’s depression worsened immediately. Continue Reading
